Petition on Muslim Women's Dress

I am very pleased to report an initiative started by some Muslim women I am acquainted with over the Internet - a petition stating that we would like other people to basically leave us alone to dress how we choose. As the three or four readers of this blog know, this is already my position, so I was happy to sign (I was the third person!) and if anyone happens to hear of it first here, please add your signature (men are welcome as well).

Muslim Women's Freedom of Dress

Thanks to Leila at Sister Scorpion for the information. Please check her blog for other important initiatives and statements on Muslim American activism of various sorts.

On Dispatches you referred to an extract from Al Hayat:

The pro-Western Arabs fear the Iranian nuclear program, and they generally support Saad Hariri, Fouad Seniora, and the 14 March Movement in Lebanon against Hizbullah, which is backed by Syria and Iran.

1. What is the fundamental relationship between Syria and Iran? Are they not Sunni and Shia nations respectively?

2. What do you make of pan-Islam, post-US intervention? Can it bring these nations together into an EU-like structure?

Thanks --

Ted, thanks for the questions. They are not easy ones. Teh Middle East is not a simple area to study! As for the second one, it is too much for me to hope that Muslims could really put aside their differences in a meaningful way to be a EU type of coalition. I really hope to be proved wrong though. Regarding the first, I posted a simple and possibly simplistic comment to Dispatches that will explain why there might be joint interests between Syria and Iran, but a Syria watcher could tell you more. I don't know much about Syria except for bare basics.

Thanks for the answer.

I am intrigued by your answer that the ME is not an easy area to study. I wonder why that is. Are you assigning some complexity to the divergent religions, the ruling families, or external influences? Maybe all, but my superficial readings of conflicts and complexity usually resolve to external factors that complicate the fundamentals.

For the record, I think that a EU like pan-Islam is possible, and will be enabled by commonly shared communication channels and meme enablers such as the internets, robust blog activities and the media (such as Al Jazeera). The alternative messaging of Al Jazeera is of a lot more concern than most other things going on (my opinion) to those trying to diverge the area.

In any case, I hope that you have had the time or opportunity to review the movie, "Why We Fight". It is an excellent movie that should be presented to each and every student in the US. It will not be.

Hey Anna,

Have you seen this Egyptian video that encourages women (and young girls) to put on a veil?
